Making a claim

We want to make the claim process as easy as possible for you or your loved ones at a difficult time.

Southern Cross Life Insurance and Southern Cross Life & Living Insurance policies are underwritten by Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited (Chubb Life). Chubb Life is responsible for all claims and administration relating to your policy.


How is a claim made?

You (the policy owner, or the executor of your estate) will need to contact the Southern Cross Life Insurance team at Chubb Life and they’ll guide you through the claims process, provide information on your policy and send out any required forms.

What information needs to be provided when making a claim?

The information you'll need to provide when making an insurance claim will vary depending on the type of claim you are making.

Note: Person insured refers to the ‘life insured’ or ‘life assured’ as defined in your policy wording/document.

For Life Cover claims in the event of death, the following will generally be needed:

  • a death certificate or Coroner’s report or other documentation confirming the person insured’s cause of death
  • Photo ID for the person insured and the policy owner (if the policy owner is not the person insured)
  • Probate (if there’s a Will) or Letters of Administration (if there’s no Will) - based on the sum insured and the policy ownership.

For Terminal Illness claims, the following will generally be required:

  • A completed claim form and copies of all relevant medical reports or any additional information from the person insured’s treating Doctor.
  • Photo ID for the person insured and the policy owner (if the policy owner is not the person insured).

When you request a claim form, the team will make sure all the information you need to give to them is clearly listed. Please make sure to send all the information they request, as this will help speed up the process.

What happens once the claim is submitted?

Once your claim is submitted, the team will aim to review and assess your claim within five working days from the date all required information and documents have been received. If additional details are required, the team will get in touch. During the assessment process, progress updates will be provided.
