Fast Track with Life Lens

There’s now a smarter way to apply for Southern Cross Life & Living Insurance.
Life Lens is a face scan tool provided by Chubb Life that can reduce the number of health questions you need to answer, helping to fast-track your application.

Life Lens is completely optional. It uses your smart phone’s camera to scan your face using technology called photoplethysmography (PPG), similar to what’s used in many wearable fitness devices.

PPG measures the reflection of light on your skin to estimate blood pressure, blood sugar and cardiovascular risk (heart-related health).

Once your scan is complete, your Life Lens results are then used to tailor your health questions in your application, helping you spend less time answering questions and more time focusing on what matters.

Why use Life Lens?

Life Lens is designed to help simplify the application process. It’s important for you to know that:

  • Your results won’t affect your application outcome or premium.
  • No image of your face is stored or recorded.
  • Your results will be stored for 30 days before being destroyed.
  • Your results are only shared with you.

It’s also important to know that Life Lens does not provide a medical diagnosis. Only an appropriately qualified health professional can provide you with medical services, perform medical tests, and diagnose health conditions and risks.

Life Lens FAQs

  • What personal information does Life Lens collect and who is it shared with?

Life Lens scans are processed securely in real-time. No images, photos or videos are taken, stored or shared.

Life Lens only estimates and collects information about your blood pressure, blood sugar levels and cardiovascular risk. No data is stored in the Life Lens tool. Chubb Life retains the results of your scan for 30 days before destroying them.

Life Lens sends your results to:

    • You: Your Life Lens results will be emailed to you one hour after completing the scan. Your results are only sent to you. If you’d prefer not to receive your results, you will have the option to opt out of receiving them.
    • Chubb Life: Your results are only used by Chubb Life to tailor the health questions you are asked as part of your Life Insurance application. Chubb Life has robust measures in place to protect your personal information and privacy.

The Southern Cross Life Insurance privacy statement includes more information about how we collect, store, use and disclose your personal information, and your rights to access and correct it.

  • Do I have to use Life Lens as part of my Life Insurance application?

No, you don’t. Life Lens is completely optional. If you’d prefer not to use it, you can continue your application without it and answer the standard health questionnaire.

  • When will I get my Life Lens results?

A copy of your results will be emailed to you one hour after completing your scan. If you’d prefer not to receive your results, you will have the option to opt-out of receiving them.

  • Should I seek medical advice after getting my Life Lens results?

Seeking medical advice is a personal decision. If you decide to seek medical advice after using Life Lens, neither Southern Cross Insurance Services Limited, Southern Cross Medical Care Society or Chubb Life will be responsible for your costs.

  • How accurate are Life Lens results?

Life Lens is accurate for the purpose of selecting questions for your life insurance application, but it’s important to note that Life Lens:

    • is not a health service, and
    • results are not a medical diagnosis, and
    • is not intended to replace professional medical advice or assessment.

Only an appropriately qualified health professional can provide you with health services and perform accurate medical tests and diagnose health conditions and risks.

The results produced by Life Lens are based on different measurements and assessments to those that a doctor or other health professional might use to produce the same health information. Usually these would require specialist medical equipment, testing under controlled conditions or multiple tests over time.

  • What if I decide to use Life Lens and then change my mind?

Using Life Lens is completely optional. You can exit the scan at any point, right up until your scan is completed, and continue with your application using the standard questionnaire.

If you have already completed your scan and would prefer not to use Life Lens as part of your application journey, you will need to start a new application and proceed using the standard questionnaire.

  • How is light used to help estimate health information?

Life Lens uses technology similar to what’s found in many wearable fitness devices, called photoplethysmography (PPG).

Life Lens uses PPG to measure changes in light absorption caused by variations in blood volume by emitting light onto your skin and then measuring the light reflected back to estimate:

    • blood pressure
    • blood sugar
    • cardiovascular risk (heart-related health)

Different light reflection patterns are associated with higher and lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Blood absorbs more light than the surrounding tissue, and light reflects from the skin differently depending on blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

This information, along with age, sex, height and weight, can help Chubb Life assess overall heart health (cardiovascular risk).

  • What happens if I scan someone else’s face?

If you don’t scan your own face, this would be considered a breach of your duty of good faith and a failure to provide true and correct information. This could result in your policy being void from the outset (which means we would treat it as though it never existed), decline any claims you make and/or alter the terms of your policy including the benefits covered.

  • I opted-out of receiving my Life Lens results, but I’ve changed my mind. Can I still get them?

If you opted out of receiving your Life Lens results, you can still get them by calling 0800 000 200, Monday to Friday between 8am – 6pm. Once our team has verified your identity, they will email your results to you. They will not be able to see them.

You have up to 30 days from the date of your scan to request your results before your results are deleted.
